What is Christian Formation?
First, Christian Formation is the name for a whole group of activities meant for all ages in our lifelong journey to the fullness of life in Christ. It has been said that “Christians are formed, more than we are made. And we are formed over our whole lifetime.” Education is not enough to help us grow and mature into vibrant Christians. It is one thing to learn about or talk about God, but that knowledge about God must be nurtured and mentored into a relationship with Him. Our spiritual lives are supported by Christian education, and by an enriched parish life and fellowship. We are nurtured by prayer, worship, the study of scripture, spiritual direction, and the sacraments. We worship, fellowship and learn within the parish but we live out our Christian lives in the world. It is a lifelong journey to be Christ to the world and to bring the love of God to friend and stranger. At St. David’s, Christian education, member nurture and spiritual formation begin with regular worship and the Eucharist. Adult Forum, Women’s Retreat Days, the Men’s Group, Men’s Bible Study, the Meditation Group and the Women’s Luncheon along with the special programs offered in Advent and Lent are some of the ways adults may find fellowship and nurture for their lifelong formation.
Our Lower Church School begins in the Nursery (infants, toddlers to age 3) and includes grades PreK through 5th grade. This curriculum is based on Bible stories and includes Communion Instruction, Children’s Worship, Projects, and inter-generational celebrations of Holy Days. At the conclusion of their class, the children come into the 10AM worship for the Children’s Talk and remain with their parent(s) to receive Holy Communion.
Rite 13 is our program for preteens in grades 6 to 8. Journey to Adulthood (or J2A) is a companion program to Rite 13 and is for our older teens in 9th through 12th grades. Our teens in J2A and Rite 13 meet together twice a month on Sunday night from 5-8pm. This is a lively time for dinner, and activities and then they go into their classes. Our youth are active in many aspects of parish life and worship. Many are active in Diocesan Youth Programs such as “Happening”, the Annual Bishop’s Ball (formal dance at the Cathedral), mission repair work in Mississippi, Scouting service projects, and more. The Youth Program seeks to nurture and help our teens become persons of faith, service, and bearers of Christ’s love in the world.
